Pest Identification Encyclopedia
Unsure what’s pest-ering you? Use our free pest identification encyclopedia to learn more, and we’ll tell whatever is bugging you to buzz off.
General Pest
Ozark pest problems show telltale signs: droppings near baseboards, musty odors, small red welts or bites, spider webs in corners, and ant trails near food sources. Brown recluse spiders prefer dark, undisturbed areas while carpenter ants leave sawdust piles, indicating active infestations requiring professional identification. It is always best to get the opinion of pest professionals if you suspect something is amiss in your home or business.
Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are tiny apple seed-sized insects that leave itchy red bite marks in lines or clusters. Check mattress seams, box springs, headboards, and nearby furniture for dark spots or shed skins. These hitchhikers spread through luggage and clothing, requiring immediate professional treatment to prevent household-wide infestation. Often confused with bat bugs, but they are not the same.
Bat Bug
Bats (yes, the flying ones) in Missouri can carry a variety of parasites that can enter the home (including fleas, ticks, and mites) but a true bat bug is the most common. Often confused with bed bugs, they are actually a cousin to the bedbug, and not the same things.
Bees
(Various Types): All types of insect stings could potentially cause anaphylaxis in humans with an allergy to specific venom types, so it is important to contact professional help if you or your family have/could have allergies to these insects.
Honey Bees
They are a conservation protected species, so mitigation for these pests is required to focus on relocation rather than extermination.
Carpenter Bees
Often confused with Bumblebees, carpenter bees are distinguishable by their shiny hairless black abdomen. They make round holes in wood to make nesting tunnels, usually requiring wood treatment or repair. Buzz can also help with structural repairs from these or other insects.
Bumblebees
This classic bee variant is probably the one you imagine when you think of a bee, leading to many people confusing their carpenter bee issue for these instead. They nest in the ground or in thick grass, so it is important to be vigilant of the ground you walk on during spring bee season, especially with young children, if these frequent your home or the surrounding area.
Hornets
Hornets (Bald-Faced variants) are a larger (up to 1 inch) species, and are black with white markings on the face and abdomen. They build large gray paper nests in trees, shrubs, eaves, soffits, rooflines, attics, sides of buildings, and more. Always check patios, your children’s play equipment, sheds, and other similar structures for these nests and immediately contact professionals for assistance, as they can cause ecological damage and potentially deadly sting reactions in humans with sensitivities.
Mosquito
Mosquito bites appear as itchy, raised bumps that can swell significantly. These pests multiply rapidly in standing water found in gutters, birdbaths, dank sheds, and yard debris. Eliminating stagnant water prevents breeding. Untreated mosquito populations increase disease transmission risk and make outdoor spaces unusable throughout summer months.
Mildew Remediation
Mildew, although not a pest, can occur in Ozark’s older, poorly-ventilated homes or businesses, causing respiratory issues, headaches, fatigue, and depression, especially affecting children, elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. EPA guidelines recommend immediate professional remediation when mildew exceeds ten square feet. Untreated mildew worsens allergies, asthma, and creates long-term health complications for vulnerable family members.
Termite
Termite mud tubes look like narrow dirt tunnels on foundation walls, while infested wood sounds hollow when tapped and crumbles easily. Swarmers leave discarded wings near windows. Untreated termites compromise structural integrity, causing sagging floors, cracked walls, and potentially unsafe living conditions requiring costly foundation repairs. Buzz can also help with structural repairs needed after mitigating termites.
Structural Repairs
Structural damage from pests, moisture, or foundation issues shows in sagging floors, cracked walls, soft wood beams, and uneven door frames. Compromised joists, rotted sills, and weakened supports threaten home safety and property value. Professional assessment identifies hidden damage before minor issues become major hazards requiring extensive reconstruction and significant financial investment.
Duct Cleaning
Clean ducts extend HVAC lifespan and prevent costly repairs or premature replacement, saving thousands in equipment costs. With over 50 million Americans suffering from allergies, professional duct cleaning removes accumulated allergens, pest debris, and contaminants that circulate continuously, making it an obvious additional service for Buzz to offer our customers, either as a follow-up to pest mitigation, or as its own service. Regular maintenance improves efficiency while reducing allergy and asthma symptoms significantly.
Vapor Barriers
Although not a pest in itself, crawl space vapor barriers prevent moisture buildup that attracts pests and promotes mold growth in Ozark’s humid climate. These polyethylene barriers seal dirt floors, reducing wood rot, improving air quality, and creating inhospitable conditions for insects and rodents. If your home or business struggles with specific types of recurrent pest issues, a vapor barrier may be the preventative service you need.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are bed bugs transferable?
Bed bugs aren’t contagious from person to person but easily spread through luggage, clothing, and furniture when moved from place to place. They hitchhike on personal belongings and can spread between rooms within minutes, with females laying up to 500 eggs in their lifetime. Always inspect and seal luggage in plastic bags after traveling to prevent bringing bed bugs home.
What do termite inspections look for?
Termite inspectors look for visible signs including mud tubes on foundations, hollow-sounding wood, discarded wings, and moisture issues that attract termites. Inspections cover interior and exterior areas including basements, attics, crawl spaces, baseboards, and plumbing penetrations through slabs. Inspectors follow moisture sources and check window sills, door frames, and foundations for damage, cracking paint, or conducive conditions.
When should I get a bug bite addressed by a healthcare professional?
See a doctor immediately if you experience hives, difficulty breathing, fever, chills, or drainage around the bite, as these indicate allergic reactions or infections. Seek medical attention for red streaks spreading from the bite, worsening pain, or fever above 100°F. Bulls-eye rashes after tick bites require immediate treatment as they may indicate Lyme disease. Generally, a visit to your regular doctor would be advised if the bug bite does not get better within a reasonable period of time.
What should I do if my new home has a pest problem?
Request a professional pest inspection before purchasing to identify hidden issues, and ask sellers about pest history. Schedule a thorough pest inspection and treatment before moving in, as new homes can have pests trapped during construction or gaps allowing entry. Deep clean before moving, seal cracks and gaps in the exterior, fix leaks, and establish preventive pest control services immediately.
